This comprehensive program shares helpful, research-based information relevant to those planning to birth in the hospital setting. High quality childbirth education reduces fear and anxiety for the mother-to-be and her partner before and during labor and promotes more confidence and participation in decision-making with caregivers. You only have your first baby once: Prepare and learn all you can!
- Prepare for all aspects of birth from knowing when to leave for the hospital or birth center to recovery after your baby is born.
- Pushing stages, birth process, newborn assessment and postpartum recovery is also covered and c/section birth is reviewed.
- Epidural anesthesia, medical pain management and medication options are discussed.
- Some natural coping methods such as relaxation, breathing and massage is practiced, but those hoping to reduce medications or other interventions should consider our Natural Childbirth or Mind, Body, Birth classes for more detailed information and practice.
- Up to date hospital and birth center policies, procedures and common interventions, fetal monitoring, newborn assessment are all discussed, with time for questions.
- The importance of the partner's role as support person is stressed, with practical suggestions and helpful techniques for each stage of labor and birth.
- Class includes viewing a birthing video and detailed home materials for further learning.
- Some insurance plans will reimburse up to $100 after you have completed your childbirth education class. Check with your insurance company to see if you qualify.
- Those who enjoy reading and learning online may prefer our Combo Childbirth Class, with more extensive guided home learning prior to one 3 hour class to practice techniques and ask questions.
Registration Information:
- One registration accommodates the expectant mother and her non-pregnant support person.
- Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for practicing movements and labor positions.
- Class Length: Saturday or Sunday classes are 7 hours, 9:30 - 4:30.
- MGH and NSMC classes are 8 hours, 9:00 - 5:00 and include hospital tour.
- Morning, afternoon and lunch breaks are provided (meals not included).
- Evening classes meet for two, 3 hour sessions.
